Common Problems and Effective Solutions for urban benches

Can I customize the color of a metal urban bench, or is it just standard black and green?

Great question! When you picture a standard metal urban bench, black and green are definitely the classics—they’re durable, blend into most environments, and are easy to maintain. But if you’re looking for something that stands out or matches a specific design theme, I have good news: many manufacturers offer color customization options.

Here’s how it usually works:

1. Powder Coating is Key – Most metal urban benches are finished with a powder coating, which is both durable and available in a wide range of colors. Instead of traditional paint, powder coating is electrostatically applied and then cured, giving you a much tougher and weather-resistant finish.

2. RAL Color Charts – The customization typically follows the RAL color system. That’s a European standard with around 200+ colors—ranging from bright reds and blues to more sophisticated grays, antique bronze, or even custom metallic finishes. So yes, you can go beyond black and green.

3. Minimum Order Quantities (MOQs) – This is the catch. If you’re ordering a single bench, most suppliers will stick with their standard color offerings (usually black, green, dark blue, or brown). Custom colors often require a minimum order quantity—maybe 10, 20, or more units—to justify the cost of color change and line cleanup in factory.

4. Lead Time and Cost – Custom colors also add a little to the lead time (extra few days for setup) and a slight price premium. Expect to pay an additional 5%–15% depending on the manufacturer.

5. Urban Look Options – For aesthetic customization without the custom RAL cost, you can also choose textured finishes (like a sand-texture or hammered look) or go with a two-tone effect (e.g., black frame with lighter seat slats).

That said, if you only need a few benches for a small park, coffee shop patio, or community garden, you may still find “coach green” and “matte black” are the most readily available. But if you’re designing a themed urban space—like a university campus or a branded plaza—don’t settle. Simply ask the supplier for a RAL color swatch and inquire about custom batch pricing.

In short: Yes, you can customize a metal urban bench’s color—but it’s most practical for bulk orders. For one-off pieces, stick with the popular colors, or consider a small local fabrication shop that can spray any color you want at a higher unit cost.
