I'm worried about tripping hazards—do your street benches have any protruding bolts or sharp edges?

I get that question a lot, and honestly, it’s the kind of detail that shows you really care about public safety. The short answer is no—no reputable street bench today should have protruding bolts or sharp edges that could trip someone or snag clothing. Modern public seating is designed with what’s called a “pedestrian-first” mindset, which basically means if it’s going to live on a sidewalk, it has to be virtually invisible to your feet and shins.

Every bench I specify or install follows strict accessibility and safety standards like the ADA and PROWAG in the U.S., or their international equivalents. The hardware is almost always either countersunk or completely concealed. Bolts are set flush into the framework, often using tamper-proof designs that sit flat against the surface. You won’t find a bolt head sticking out half an inch waiting to catch an ankle. The feet of the bench—where most people worry about tripping—are typically rounded, beveled, or tucked directly under the seat so they don’t protrude into the walking path. If a leg does extend forward, its edges are radiused, meaning they’re smoothly curved to deflect impact rather than cause injury.

Sharp edges are an even bigger no. The armrests, seat slats, and backrests all go through a deburring and finishing process that knocks down any angular corners. For materials like metal, that often means a combination of grinding, sanding, and powder coating to create a consistently soft-to-the-touch surface. Wooden slats are rounded over and sealed so they never splinter. Even the underside of the bench gets attention—if someone accidentally swings a leg under there, they shouldn’t encounter a jagged bracket.

I’d also add that a properly installed bench isn’t just about the bench itself; it’s about how it sits in its environment. The mounting surface needs to be flush and stable. If a bench is surface-mounted on a concrete pad, the anchor bolts are actually sunk below the finished floor level and capped, so there’s nothing above ground except smooth metal or a recessed fitting. In-ground mounting systems bury the entire footing, leaving only the clean silhouette of the frame above the pavement.

Still, I understand why the concern sticks with people. We’ve all encountered outdated or poorly maintained street furniture that has worked itself loose over time, creating a single bolt that slowly rises up like a little landmine. That’s a maintenance issue, not a design flaw in modern products. The benches being installed today in municipal projects, campus landscapes, and commercial plazas almost always come with long-term warranties and are engineered to stay exactly as they were on day one. The focus is on rounded geometry, flush connections, and smooth perimeter detailing that makes the bench feel like it grew out of the ground rather than something bolted onto it.

So if you’re standing there looking at a new installation and worrying about tripping, you can breathe easy. Those details have been obsessed over by designers who know that a public bench has to be a good neighbor to every pedestrian—whether they’re looking straight at it or just passing by with their morning coffee in one hand and their dog leash in the other.
