If you’re eyeing a typical 6-foot outdoor bench for your garden, patio, or public space, the honest answer is that two people can sit on it very comfortably, and three can fit if everyone is okay with a bit of closeness. Most standard 6-foot benches measure 72 inches from end to end. To sit without your shoulders pressing into your neighbor, each adult needs roughly 22 to 24 inches of hip and shoulder room. That math gives you exactly three 24-inch “personal spaces,” but in real life, arms, jackets, bags, and the natural way people shift around usually make three adults feel slightly cramped. For two adults, though, a 6-foot bench feels luxurious. You can each stretch out a little, set a coffee cup or a small bag between you, and not worry about constant contact. If you have armrests or a backrest with thick cushions, those features take up extra width, so comfortable capacity drops closer to two. Likewise, if the bench is used mostly by kids or slender teenagers, three can sit cheerfully with room to spare. When people ask me for a quick rule, I tell them: budget about 24 inches per adult for true comfort, 18 to 20 inches if the group is friendly and the bench is armless. So for a 6-foot bench, expect two very happy sitters, or three good friends who don’t mind a little shoulder-to-shoulder time. If you need guaranteed space for three or more, look at 7-foot or 8-foot benches, or consider pairing two 6-foot benches with a small table in between. That way everyone gets elbow room, and nobody has to balance a drink on their knee.
