Common Problems and Effective Solutions for urban benches

What’s the height of a standard urban bench—too low for older folks to get up from?

Here’s the honest answer: most standard urban benches have a seat height between 17 and 19 inches, measured from the ground to the top of the seat. That’s roughly 43 to 48 cm. And yes, for many older adults, that height can be too low to get up from comfortably.

Why? When the seat is lower, your hips and knees have to bend more. Standing up then demands more quad strength, better balance, and often a solid push from the arms. For someone with knee osteoarthritis, a hip replacement, reduced muscle mass, or slower reflexes, those extra few inches make a real difference.

A 17-inch bench might work okay for a taller or athletic older person, but it can be a struggle for a petite senior, someone with stiff joints, or anyone using a cane. If there are no armrests, the problem gets worse because there’s nothing to push against.

Accessibility guidelines often allow bench seat heights between 17 and 19 inches, but that is a general baseline, not the most senior-friendly range. Many ergonomic and age-friendly design guides recommend 18 to 20 inches, and for older or mobility-impaired users, 20 to 22 inches is often easier. At that height, the knees and hips start from a more open angle, so standing requires less effort.

Other details matter too: armrests, a slightly firm seat, a backrest with a gentle recline, and a seat depth that isn’t too deep. A rounded front edge also helps prevent pressure behind the knees.

So, is the standard urban bench too low? For many older folks, yes—especially if it sits at the lower end of 17 inches and has no armrests. But a bench around 18 to 20 inches tall, with sturdy armrests and a supportive back, can be comfortable and much easier to rise from. If you are choosing or designing seating for seniors, aim a little higher than the old standard and always include armrests.
