The most vandal-resistant setup I see specified is a hot-dip galvanized steel frame with solid stainless steel or high-density polyethylene, or HDPE, slats. If you want a single-material answer, 316 stainless steel is the toughest all-rounder.
Here’s why that combination wins. Skate parks create a unique wear pattern: boards and trucks grind edges, kids kick and drop bikes, and heavy foot traffic brings stickers, marker, and spray paint. Wood splinters and burns, cast aluminum cracks, hollow steel dents and rusts once the coating is scratched, and concrete can chip at exposed corners despite its weight. Galvanized steel has a zinc coating that resists rust even where the surface gets scratched. It can also be powder-coated for color, and scratches are less likely to turn into structural rust. Stainless steel slats or hardware resist corrosion, graffiti removers, and repeated scrubbing better than coated steel.
HDPE lumber-style slats are the practical upgrade over wood. They don’t rot, don’t need painting, are hard to carve deeply, don’t splinter, and most solvents used to remove spray paint won’t destroy the surface. They won’t feel as premium as stainless, but they’re warmer to sit on and cheaper than a full stainless bench.
If budget allows, a fully 316 stainless steel bench is the closest thing to set-and-forget. It handles graffiti removal well, resists corrosion, has no paint to scratch, and can take abuse without losing structural strength. The downsides are higher cost, heat in direct sun, and visible cosmetic scratching over time.
Avoid timber, plastic-coated steel, cast aluminum, and thin-gauge hollow steel near a skate park. Also avoid benches with removable slats held by standard screws. Use tamper-resistant fixings instead.
