Great question — and you’re right to think about weight. A lot of park benches are lighter than people expect, especially aluminum or steel slat models. As a rough guide:
- Aluminum benches: 40–70 lbs (18–32 kg)
- Steel slat benches: 75–150 lbs (34–68 kg)
- Recycled plastic benches: 80–150 lbs (36–68 kg)
- Hardwood/timber benches: 70–180 lbs (32–82 kg)
- Concrete or stone benches: 300–600+ lbs (136–272+ kg)
If you’re worried about vandals moving them at night, weight alone isn’t a guarantee. Two or three people can drag a 150 lb bench fairly easily. The best fix is to anchor the bench to the ground. Use galvanized or stainless steel anchor bolts into a concrete pad, or choose a bench with pre-drilled mounting feet. You can also use security or tamper-resistant bolts, and if the bench is on grass, set it in concrete footings. For very exposed areas, go with a heavy concrete bench or a steel bench with a weighted base. That combination of weight and anchoring will stop most casual vandalism and theft.
