Instead of wedging shims under the legs or accepting that annoying rock back and forth, the adjustable feet compensate for dips, slopes, cracked concrete, brick pavers, or compacted gravel. Each foot typically has a threaded steel stem and a nonslip base. You turn the foot with a wrench or hex key to raise or lower that corner by up to about one inch, depending on the model. Once you find the stable position, a lock nut keeps the foot from creeping. The base is usually made from stainless steel or zinc-plated steel with a rubber or polyurethane pad, so it resists moisture, salt, and vibration. This is important for street furniture because benches get heavy use and sit outside in rain, sun, and freeze-thaw cycles. For most uneven ground, adjustable feet alone will stop the wobble. If the surface is severely sloped or the bench is exposed to high foot traffic, we also recommend surface-mounting the bench with anchor bolts. In that case the adjustable feet still help you level the bench before anchoring, and the anchors keep it locked in place.
