Honestly, the safest first step is to avoid aggressive scrubbing and harsh solvents, because the finish on a metal street bench is often paint or powder coat and can scratch or cloud easily. Start with warm water, a few drops of mild dish soap, and a soft microfiber cloth or non-abrasive sponge. This will handle fresh tags, dirt, and some inks. Wipe in small circles, rinse with clean water, and dry. If that doesn’t remove it, use a graffiti remover specifically labeled safe for painted metal or powder-coated surfaces. Apply the product to a cloth instead of spraying directly onto the bench, then let it sit for about 30–60 seconds. Gently wipe the area and repeat as needed. Avoid pressing hard or scrubbing with anything abrasive. For stubborn paint, a plastic scraper or old credit card can lift softened graffiti, but skip steel wool, wire brushes, and scouring pads. Those will dull or scratch the finish. Do not automatically reach for acetone, lacquer thinner, or paint stripper. Many of these will soften the painted or powder-coated finish and leave a cloudy, sticky patch. If you must use a stronger solvent, test it first on a hidden spot like the underside of the seat. If the bench has a powder-coated finish and the graffiti is large, a low-pressure pressure washer under about 1500 psi with a fan nozzle can help after applying the remover. Keep the nozzle at least 12 inches away and angle it so you aren’t forcing water under the coating. Once the graffiti is gone, rinse the area well with clean water and dry it with a soft cloth. If the finish looks slightly dull, a light coat of a metal-safe wax or protectant can restore sheen and make future cleanup easier. Test any method on a hidden spot first. It’s much easier to avoid damage than to repaint or recoat a bench afterward.
