Great question—when pets are involved, I always steer people away from rough, porous wood and non-washable fabric cushions because they trap fur, stains, and odors. Instead, look for smooth, non-porous materials that can be wiped down in seconds.
Here are my favorite pet-friendly outdoor bench ideas:
1. Poly lumber benches. This recycled plastic material is my top pick because it doesn’t warp, splinter, or absorb odors. Mud and pet messes wipe right off with warm soapy water, and slatted designs let fur fall through instead of piling up. Brands like Polywood and Highwood have plenty of sizes and colors.
2. Powder-coated aluminum benches. Aluminum won’t rust, and a smooth powder-coated finish is very easy to clean. Choose a style with a slatted or perforated seat so water and fur don’t collect. A quick wipe with a damp microfiber cloth or a rinse with a hose is usually all it takes.
3. Teak or shorea wood with a smooth finish. If you want real wood, go with dense hardwoods instead of soft cedar or unfinished pine. Teak has natural oils that resist moisture and odors, but it still benefits from an occasional scrub with a pet-safe wood cleaner. Keep it sanded smooth so claws don’t catch.
4. Resin wicker over an aluminum frame. This gives you the look of wicker without the splinters. Make sure the weave is flat and tight rather than chunky or open, because pet hair can get trapped in deep grooves. A damp cloth and mild dish soap will handle most dirt.
5. Benches with removable, machine-washable cushion covers. If you want cushions, only buy ones with zippered covers made from outdoor fabrics such as Sunbrella or Olefin. That way you can unzip, wash, and air-dry them. If the cover isn’t removable, skip the cushion—it will eventually hold odors.
A few extra tips: medium or speckled finishes hide pet hair between cleanings; avoid open-cell foam cushions because they soak up accidents; and check that the bench has rounded edges and stable legs if your pet likes to jump up. I’d also keep a spray bottle of diluted white vinegar or a pet-safe outdoor cleaner nearby for quick wipe-downs.
My personal favorite setup is a slatted poly lumber bench in a mid-tone gray or teak finish. It handles claws, muddy paws, and spilled water without looking beat up, and cleanup is just a quick wipe or hose-down.
