Common Problems and Effective Solutions for urban benches

Are these outdoor benches safe near playgrounds—no sharp edges or pinch points?

Great question—yes, outdoor benches can be safe near playgrounds if you choose the right design and check a few critical details. A child-friendly bench should have rounded or eased edges on the seat, backrest, and armrests. This helps prevent scrapes and cuts when kids run, climb, or accidentally bump into the bench. Avoid benches with exposed bolt heads, sharp metal corners, rough welds, or splintering wood.

Pinch points are a little trickier. A stationary bench does not have moving parts like a swing or see-saw, but it can still create finger traps. Check the gaps between seat slats, where the backrest meets the frame, and around armrest joints. Safe designs keep those gaps either very small—under about 5 mm—or wide enough that little fingers cannot get stuck. Also look under the seat for crossbars or open slots that could catch a child's hand.

If you are planning to place benches near a playground, choose models labeled as child-safe outdoor furniture or designed to meet playground safety guidelines. If you already have benches installed, do a hands-on test: run your fingers along every edge, press on hardware to make sure nothing protrudes, and test any gaps that could trap a small finger. If everything feels smooth, solid, and gap-safe, the bench is a much lower risk for kids.
