If you can't bolt your street bench down, you can still make it a huge hassle to steal. First, use a thick hardened steel chain and a weatherproof padlock to secure one leg or the frame to a nearby immovable object like a tree, lamp post, or heavy fence. Second, add serious weight by filling hollow legs with sand or concrete or by attaching a heavy concrete block to the underside with heavy-duty straps. Third, hide a small GPS tracker inside a drilled cavity or under a removable seat slat so you can track it if it disappears. Fourth, install a motion-activated alarm that emits a loud siren when someone lifts or tilts the bench. Fifth, engrave or paint a unique ID number and "STOLEN - POLICE" on visible metal parts to destroy resale value. Sixth, place the bench in a well-lit, high-traffic area or under a security camera; thieves hate being watched. Finally, if the bench is light enough, bring it inside at night or chain it to your porch railing. Combining two or three of these tricks makes theft so risky and noisy that most opportunists will move on to an easier target.
How do I prevent my street bench from being stolen if it’s not bolted down?
