Yes—there are definitely options for benches with wheelchair spaces on either end of a street bench. These are usually called wheelchair accessible benches, ADA benches, or inclusive street benches, and many commercial site furniture brands offer them as standard or custom products.
Instead of running slats all the way to the ends, the bench keeps a conventional seated section in the center and reserves one or both ends for a wheelchair user. The wheelchair space is typically open, level with the adjacent pavement, and wide enough for a chair to pull in without blocking the walkway.
When shopping for a bench like this, look for these features:
- A clear space of at least 30 to 36 inches at each wheelchair position.
- A firm, flat, slip-resistant surface underneath, such as concrete, pavers, or compacted stone.
- Sturdy armrests and a backrest for seated users and people transferring from a wheelchair.
- Durable materials like powder-coated steel, aluminum, recycled plastic lumber, or FSC hardwood.
- Optional color contrast or textured edges to help people with low vision identify the bench.
You can find these options by searching for "ADA bench with wheelchair space," "wheelchair accessible park bench," or "inclusive outdoor bench." Many manufacturers that supply parks, streetscapes, school campuses, and transit stops will also customize the length, material, and end configuration. If you need wheelchair spaces at both ends, ask the supplier for a double-end accessible layout.
Before specifying a bench, confirm that the clear space, slope, and surface meet your local accessibility code. This small detail makes a big difference for wheelchair users, caregivers, and anyone who wants to sit next to a companion outdoors.
