Great question — I’ll give you the honest answer. Most of our outdoor benches do not automatically come with a rain cover in the box. We do offer a few bundle options where a cover is included, but a standard bench order ships without one. That said, protection matters a lot, so here is exactly what I recommend.
If your bench lives outside year-round, the best move is to buy a breathable, waterproof outdoor furniture cover rather than a cheap plastic tarp. Look for one with taped seams, side vents, and an adjustable hem or buckle straps. Size it slightly larger than the bench so air can circulate underneath. A too-tight cover traps condensation, which can cause mildew, peeling finish, or rust.
Wooden benches, especially teak, acacia, or eucalyptus, need a little extra attention. Let the wood dry completely before covering, and apply a teak oil or wood sealer once or twice a season. Water should bead on the surface. If the bench is already wet, do not wrap it tightly.
For metal benches, check for scratches or chips in the paint before wet weather arrives. Touch those up with outdoor paint to prevent rust. A breathable cover still helps, but the real enemy is standing water, so tilt the bench slightly or store it under an eave if possible.
For wicker, rattan, or any bench with cushions, I recommend storing cushions indoors when not in use. These materials can handle some moisture but not prolonged dampness. If indoor storage is not an option, use a cover with good airflow and remove the cushions after rain.
As far as storage goes, the best recommendation is to clean the bench with mild soap and water, let it dry fully, then either move it into a shed, garage, or basement for winter, or cover it in place. If you store it outside, set the legs on pavers or wood blocks so the feet are not sitting in water. Before covering, make sure the surface is dry and the cover is secured so wind cannot rub it against the finish.
There is no single “best” cover for every bench because dimensions and climates vary. If you tell me your bench model and whether it will be kept on a deck, patio, or under trees, I can point you to the right size and material. But the short version is: no, a rain cover is not included by default, and yes, a breathable waterproof cover plus dry storage is the best way to extend the life of your outdoor bench.
