Common Problems and Effective Solutions for urban benches

How heavy is a typical concrete urban bench, and can two people move it?

A typical concrete urban bench usually weighs somewhere between 400 and 900 pounds, depending on its length, design, thickness, and whether the base is cast as one piece. A simple 4-foot bench without a backrest might be on the lighter end around 300–450 lb, while a 6-foot bench with a back, armrests, and an integrated base can easily top 700–900 lb or more. Reinforced precast units are dense: concrete alone weighs roughly 150 lb per cubic foot, and urban benches are designed to resist weather and vandalism. So can two people move one? It depends on what you mean by move. Two average adults should not attempt to dead-lift a full concrete bench. Safe lifting limits for most people are far below that kind of load, and the shape is awkward. However, two reasonably strong people can often shift a smaller bench a short distance by tilting and walking it one end at a time, or by using a heavy-duty dolly, furniture straps, pry bars, or pipe rollers. For anything over about 500–600 lb, or if you need to load it into a truck, move it up stairs, or cross soft ground, you will want at least a heavy-duty hand truck rated for the weight, or a small crew and mechanical help. In short: two people can move many concrete benches with the right tools and technique, but it is not a safe bare-hand lifting job. Use gloves, clear the path, and treat even a small concrete bench as a serious load.
