Common Problems and Effective Solutions for urban benches

Are your street benches easily movable, or are they really meant to be permanent installations?

Great question—this is one of the first things I ask when someone is specifying benches for a streetscape, park, or commercial project. The short answer is that some street benches are designed to be permanent installations, while others are built to be movable. It really comes down to the model, the base, and how you anchor them.

Most benches intended for public streets, sidewalks, transit stops, and parks are meant to be permanent. They are usually anchored to a concrete pad or buried into the ground with steel footings. This keeps them stable, prevents theft, and ensures they won’t become a hazard by sliding out of place. If a bench is bolted down, it can still be removed later, but it isn’t something people can easily pick up and carry away. That’s usually what you want in a high-traffic public space.

We do offer movable street benches as well. These models often have a heavier weighted base or a wide stance to keep them stable without anchors. Some are designed with forklift access or lift points so a maintenance crew can relocate them. Movable benches are common in mixed-use developments, outdoor dining areas, campuses, event venues, and seasonal spaces where layouts change. They’re not typically something you’d move every hour, but they give you flexibility from season to season or event to event.

When I help clients decide, I usually ask about the surface and how often they expect to move the bench. If it’s going on grass or gravel, a permanent install may require buried concrete footings. If it’s going on a plaza or sidewalk, anchor bolts into the concrete are straightforward. If you need to reconfigure a space regularly, a non-anchored but weighted bench is often the best fit. If theft or vandalism is a concern, permanent anchoring is almost always the safer choice.

One more thing: even permanent benches can be moved eventually. It just takes unbolting, cutting anchors, or breaking out small footings. So “permanent” really means it’s not meant to be moved casually—it’s meant to stay in place for safety and durability. If you’re looking for a bench you can reposition on a regular basis, we can definitely point you toward the right movable option.
