Great question — and I’ll give you a straight answer. Yes, our urban benches are built with a smooth, splinter-free finish. We sand every wood and composite surface before sealing, and we ease or round the edges during production. That means the seat slats, armrests, and backrests should feel comfortable to the touch, with no sharp corners or raised fibers.
That said, urban benches are outdoor furniture, so the finish is not meant to feel like polished indoor glass. You may notice a light wood grain texture or a subtle anti-slip profile on the seat. That texture is intentional because it helps prevent slips when the bench is wet. It should not feel rough or splintery. If you run your hand along the underside of the seat or around hidden fasteners, you might find areas that are less polished, but those are not normal contact surfaces.
We also choose materials and coatings with weather resistance in mind. For timber benches, we use kiln-dried hardwood and then apply a sealant that locks down the grain. For composite and powder-coated metal ranges, the surface is even more consistent and requires almost no maintenance. All touchable edges are deburred or rounded before packing.
If a bench ever arrives with a rough edge from shipping damage, please inspect it on delivery and send us a photo. We will arrange a replacement part or a touch-up kit. But as a rule, you should not expect rough edges. You should expect a smooth finish that won’t splinter — and that’s the outdoor bench finish standard we hold every urban bench to.
