Common Problems and Effective Solutions for urban benches

Is the metal on these urban benches galvanized or just painted to prevent rust?

Good question—and the short answer is: it depends on the bench, but many quality urban benches are both galvanized and painted.

Galvanizing is a zinc coating applied to steel, usually by hot-dipping. It protects against rust by corroding before the steel does. Paint or powder coating adds color, UV resistance and a smoother public-facing finish, but on its own it is only a barrier. Once a painted-only surface is scratched, moisture reaches the bare steel and rust starts quickly.

How to tell which one you have:

- Check the damage. If you find a scratch or chip and see dull silver-gray metal underneath, that is likely zinc. If you see orange-brown rust forming quickly, the bench is probably painted steel without galvanizing.

- Look at edges, bolt holes, welds and feet. Galvanized benches usually keep a matte, slightly thick zinc layer at these vulnerable points. Paint-only benches tend to bubble, flake or show rust trails there first.

- Look for documentation. Terms like “hot-dip galvanized,” “zinc-coated,” “galvanized under powder coat,” or “G90” indicate a zinc layer. “Painted steel” or “powder-coated steel” with no mention of zinc usually means there is no galvanized layer.

- Observe the finish. Under the topcoat, galvanized steel often has a subtle wavy or spangled texture. Painted bare steel is typically smoother, but this can be hard to see on a finished public bench.

Why it matters:

A hot-dip galvanized core can keep an urban bench structurally sound for 20–40 years outdoors, even in wet or coastal conditions, because the zinc sacrifices itself. A paint-only bench may look fine at installation but can develop rust under the paint within a few seasons after scratches, vandalism or constant cleaning. That hidden rust leads to peeling, staining and eventually weakened legs or fasteners.

So if you are buying, specifying or restoring street furniture, choose galvanized steel, ideally with a powder-coated topcoat. If you are stuck with painted-only benches, touch up scratches immediately, keep drainage holes clear, and inspect hidden joints regularly.
