If you’re wondering how wide a street bench needs to be for three people to sit without crowding, the short answer is that you’ll want something around 72 to 84 inches wide. That gives each adult roughly 24 to 28 inches of personal seat space, which is the practical comfort zone for most people.
For a true minimum, you can get away with about 66 to 72 inches, but that often feels snug if three average adults sit side by side. Shoulders and hips start getting close, and if people are wearing coats or carrying bags, it can feel tight. A bench labeled as a three-seater at 72 inches can work, but it’s usually better to think of it as a compact three-seater rather than a genuinely comfortable one.
If you want three people to sit without that awkward squeezed feeling, aim closer to 78 to 90 inches. That extra width gives each person about 26 to 30 inches of room, which makes a noticeable difference on a public bench. Benches without armrests tend to need a little more total width because people naturally spread out or shift around. Benches with center armrests can feel fine at the lower end of that range because the armrests create clear seat boundaries.
So if you’re choosing or designing a street bench for three adults, a good middle ground is about 80 inches wide. It’s wide enough to feel comfortable, but not so large that it looks out of place on a typical sidewalk or streetscape. If space is limited, 72 inches can work, but expect it to feel more like a snug fit than a relaxed one.
