Common Problems and Effective Solutions for urban benches

How do your park benches hold up against skateboarders grinding on the edges?

Honestly, skateboarders are one of the first things we think about when designing a park bench for public spaces. The short answer is that our benches hold up well — but we design them so the bench doesn’t have to win every single encounter with a board.

The main weak point is the edge. If you use thin angle iron or soft aluminum, a skateboard truck will chew it up within a season. That’s why our standard park benches use thick-wall steel tube or solid steel bar on the front lip, usually 3/16 inch or heavier. That extra mass absorbs grinds without cracking or bending. We also keep welds out of the direct grind path where possible and round the corners so there’s less for a truck to catch.

Finish matters just as much. Standard powder coat looks clean, but skateboard trucks will scrape through it. We offer a hot-dipped galvanized undercoat or a textured powder coat that hides scuffs much better. Some cities and campuses add stainless steel edge caps or replaceable steel wear strips. That makes maintenance simple: if a maintenance crew sees deep grooves after a few years, they swap the strip instead of the whole bench.

We also shape the edge to be less inviting to grind. We avoid aggressive anti-skate brackets because they can look hostile and create their own safety issues. Instead, we use a slightly rounded or beveled profile. It still takes hits, but the board slides off more often and does less focused damage to one spot.

If your location gets heavy skate traffic, I’d recommend the heavy-gauge steel edge plus replaceable wear strips. That combo is as close to a skateboard-proof park bench as you can get without making the bench unpleasant to sit on. It has held up well in skate parks, transit plazas, college campuses, and downtown streets. You’ll see scratches and scuffs, but not structural failure — and that’s the realistic goal for a public bench.
