Many municipalities intentionally design these benches to discourage loitering or sleeping, which explains their often-slanted surfaces and armrests that prevent lying down. For short breaks while waiting for transportation or quick lunch stops, they serve their purpose adequately. However, if you're planning to read a book, have a lengthy conversation, or simply relax outdoors for an hour or more, you'll likely find yourself shifting positions frequently and eventually seeking more comfortable alternatives. Some modern designs incorporate slight contoured shapes or wooden slats to improve comfort slightly, but the fundamental issue remains - metal benches prioritize durability and public policy over genuine comfort for extended sitting periods.
