Common Problems and Effective Solutions for urban benches

We have a problem with people sleeping on our current urban benches, are there designs that discourage that?

Many cities and businesses face challenges with people sleeping on public benches, which can impact accessibility and intended use. Fortunately, several design approaches can gently discourage this while keeping benches functional for seated rest.

One common solution is incorporating dividers or individual armrests between seating spaces. These partitions make lying down uncomfortable and impractical. Another effective design uses slightly slanted or curved seating surfaces, which are perfectly fine for short-term sitting but become increasingly uncomfortable for reclining over time.

Materials also play a key role. Benches with metal slats or strategic gaps can dissipate heat and cold, making them less appealing for extended stays. Some designs feature central armrests or creative, segmented shapes that break up the flat, continuous surface needed for sleeping.

It's important to balance deterrence with public service. The goal isn't to eliminate seating but to ensure it's available for its primary purpose: providing rest for pedestrians, commuters, and visitors. Modern "anti-sleep" designs often integrate aesthetically into urban landscapes, appearing as artistic or ergonomic choices rather than overt deterrents. This approach addresses the practical issue while maintaining a welcoming public environment for all legitimate users.
