Common Problems and Effective Solutions for urban benches

How do I clean mildew or algae off of wooden park benches?

Seeing greenish mildew or slippery algae on your favorite wooden park bench is disheartening. Not only does it look unsightly, but it can also degrade the wood over time. The good news? You can restore it safely with common household items. First, put on protective gloves. For a simple solution, mix one part distilled white vinegar with one part water in a spray bottle. For tougher growth, a solution of ¾ cup chlorine bleach per gallon of water is effective, but test it on a small, hidden area first as bleach can lighten some woods. Always use gentle, non-metallic scrubbing tools to avoid damaging the wood's surface.

Start by brushing off any loose debris. Apply your chosen cleaning solution generously to the affected areas and let it sit for 10-15 minutes to penetrate. Gently scrub the surface with a soft-bristled brush or a non-abrasive pad, working along the wood grain. Rinse the bench thoroughly with a garden hose or buckets of clean water. It's crucial to remove all cleaning residue. Finally, let the bench dry completely in the sun for at least 24-48 hours. To help prevent future growth, consider applying a protective sealant or wood stain designed for outdoor use once the wood is fully dry. Regular sweeping and keeping the bench in a sunny, well-ventilated spot will also discourage mildew and algae from returning.
