Common Problems and Effective Solutions for urban benches

How do I clean mildew off of my wooden outdoor benches?

Noticing fuzzy or discolored patches on your wooden outdoor benches? That's mildew, a common issue caused by moisture and lack of sunlight. Don't worry—it's fixable. Here’s a safe, effective method to restore your benches.

First, put on gloves and move the bench to a well-ventilated area. Brush off any loose debris with a stiff-bristled brush. For the cleaning solution, mix equal parts white vinegar and water in a spray bottle. Vinegar is a natural fungicide. For tougher mildew, add a tablespoon of dish soap to the mix.

Spray the solution generously onto the mildewed areas. Let it sit for 10-15 minutes to penetrate the mold. Then, scrub the wood firmly with your brush, following the grain to avoid scratches. For stubborn spots, you can make a paste using baking soda and a little water and apply it before scrubbing.

Once the mildew is gone, rinse the bench thoroughly with a garden hose or a bucket of clean water. It's crucial to remove all the cleaning residue. Dry the wood completely with old towels and let it air dry in the sun for several hours.

To help prevent future mildew growth, consider applying a water-repellent sealant or wood preservative designed for outdoor use once the bench is completely dry. Regular cleaning and keeping the bench under cover when possible will also extend its life.
