If you’re planning to move, install, or buy a bench, the weight difference between a typical park bench and a concrete bench is bigger than most people expect. A standard metal-frame park bench with wood slats usually weighs between 80 and 150 pounds. A precast concrete park bench of similar length typically weighs between 400 and 800 pounds. In practical terms, a concrete bench is often three to six times heavier.
A “typical” park bench isn’t one universal design. A 6-foot bench with a steel frame and wooden slats will generally fall in the 85–150 lb range. Aluminum benches are lighter, often 45–70 lbs. Cast iron benches can be heavier, around 150–250 lbs, because cast iron is dense and the frames are often ornate. Recycled plastic lumber benches usually run 60–100 lbs. So if someone says a park bench weighs about 100 pounds, that’s a fair middle-ground estimate for a standard wood-and-metal model.
Concrete benches are in a different category. Most precast concrete benches with a backrest weigh 400–800 lbs. A two-piece concrete bench with a separate base can weigh 600–1,000 lbs or more. Concrete weighs roughly 140–150 lbs per cubic foot, and a bench uses several cubic feet of material plus steel reinforcement, so the weight adds up fast. Some larger or reinforced concrete benches exceed 1,200 lbs.
Why the big gap? It comes down to material density and construction. Wood and hollow steel tubing are relatively light, while concrete is solid, dense, and often reinforced. A concrete bench also uses thicker sections to resist cracking, which increases volume and weight.
For moving and installation, the difference matters. Two adults can usually slide or lift a 100–150 lb metal/wood bench into place with a hand truck or just muscle, though it’s awkward. A 500–800 lb concrete bench usually needs a pallet jack, skid steer, or a small team with lifting straps. It also needs a firm, level base because its own weight can cause settling.
So the quick comparison is: typical park bench around 80–150 lbs; typical concrete bench around 400–800 lbs. If you need something easy to relocate, choose a wood/metal or recycled plastic bench. If you want something that will stay put in a public space, concrete’s extra weight can be a benefit.
